Frequently Asked Questions

An initial case review is short (10-20 minute) telephone discussion where we ask questions about your case in order to evaluate (1) whether our firm is a good fit for the particular legal problem you're dealing with; and (2) whether we can point you in the direction of another resource (such as the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI)), in the event we feel we're not a good fit. Initial case reviews do not involve us answering legal questions, telling you what you "should do," or forming an ongoing attorney-client relationship. That being said, in certain cases our attorney may provide insight or simple advice when he considers it appropriate.

In cases where a more involved discussion is required - such as an employee who is given a severance agreement or a non-competition agreement that needs to be reviewed - a paid consultation with an attorney may be available. 

There is no charge for the initial interview. In instances where we end up taking a case, the vast majority are handled on either an "hourly" or "flat fee" basis. Both of those fee arrangement require a deposit (often called a "retainer") from which our fees are paid. The amount of the deposit depends on the size and complexity of the case. 

In a limited number of cases we agree to represent clients on a "contingency" basis (the "you don't pay us unless we win" arrangement commonly seen in personal injury attorney TV ads). Due to the risk of performing thousands of dollars worth of legal work without getting paid at the end, we are extremely choosey about which cases we are willing to handle under a contingent fee agreement.
